Prepare a simple sketch

Draw the room from above and label each wall with a letter. Choose a unit, such as centimetres, and use it consistently. A simple drawing with clear dimensions is more useful than a polished plan with missing information.

Include the adjoining area in an open-plan room. Mark routes through the space and furniture you will keep, even when it is outside the kitchen. That shows which limits need to remain and which can be explored.

Measurements to record

ElementInitial information
WallsLength of each run and height to the ceiling.
DoorsWidth, position and opening direction.
WindowsWidth, position, sill height and opening.
Columns or projectionsVisible position and dimensions.
CeilingBeams, height changes and other obstacles.
ServicesVisible water, waste, socket and extraction positions.

Label hidden or unidentified details as awaiting confirmation. Do not open a service connection or dismantle an appliance to complete this first set of information.

Photographs that explain the room

Take a photograph from the entrance and others from the corners. Include windows, doors and wall junctions with the floor and ceiling. Wide views explain relationships; close-ups show details that need attention.

Show the full wall where possible. If photographing a measurement, make the reference and endpoint clear. A video call from the property can supplement details that the sketch does not explain.

Items you want to keep

Record the brand and model of appliances you will retain. An approximate width is not a substitute for installation dimensions and ventilation requirements. Send the reference or an accessible identification label photograph.

Note any sink, table, lighting or cladding that needs to stay. Separate items to retain from those you want to replace; that allows alternatives to be studied without assuming a complete renovation.

Verification before ordering

Initial dimensions allow us to discuss options. Before ordering, actual sizes, squareness, levels, access and installation details affecting cabinetry and worktops need checking. The verification arrangement is agreed as part of the project.

Send the sketch with your priorities: property use, style, approximate budget and preferred timing. With COSTAHAUS you can begin online and combine that work with a property visit as the kitchen requires.
